29 June 2020E ready, the first prosthesis, the liquid of the retina: made of nanoparticles suspended in an aqueous solution, was developed in Italy and promises to help repair the damage caused by degenerative diseases or by aging which can lead to blindness, such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration.
Published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, the result has been coordinated by the Italian Institute of Technology (Iit).
“An artificial retina liquid has a great potential to ensure a wide field of view and a view at high resolution,” said Fabio Benfenati, director of the Center for Synaptic Neuroscience, and Technology of the Italian Institute of Technologies (Iit) of Genoa, who has coordinated the research. Compared to current techniques, the artificial retina, liquid has proven capable of restoring the ability of neurons of the retina in a less invasive and more efficient. It is formed from an aqueous solution in which are suspended nanoparticles sensitive to light. from the diameter of a penny compared to that of a human hair, which replace the cells of the retina is damaged. This is the evolution of the artificial retina, obtained in the past by the same research group. Thanks to its liquid nature, the prosthesis ensures interventions are shorter and less traumatic, which consist of microinieizioni of the nanoparticles directly underneath the retina, where they are trapped taking the place of the photoreceptors degenerate.
